Weekend Reading, 12/21
Though a bailout for the auto industry was passed, their struggles are far from over.
The NYTimes has quite an interesting historical perspective on the current housing crisis (which turned into this recession), showing how it had its roots in policy decisions of the current administration.
Frank Rich has an excellent article on the harsh irony of a scheme like Madoff’s happening at a time like this - when we feel like things couldn’t get any worse. If it’s really true that $1.6 billion of our tax money went straight to the pockets of the executives of the financial companies that helped bring us into the mess, the injustice becomes nearly unbearable.
The 401(k) match, frequently hailed as the replacement for the pension plan, is also going to the wayside. Note to all Americans: you and your retirement are increasingly in your own hands.
Lastly, I had family flying all around the country yesterday, with one member of my family landing in Denver at exactly 6:30 pm. I am quite thankful we all got to our destinations safely. It really puts lost luggage and screaming babies into perspective.
